Managment Magic

The Magic of Management

Using management is being proactive in your pet’s training and behaviour. It involves making changes to the environment or training set up to prevent unwanted behaviours from being rehearsed, to assist with behaviour change and to set your learner up for success.

Young dogs can learn bad habits quickly, so management can prevent habits being formed and allow more desired behaviours to be practiced and makes training easier.

  • Examples of management in dog training and behaviour change plans:

  • Using baby gates to prevent access to certain areas of the house.

  • Walking your reactive dog late at night to avoid running into triggers your dog can’t cope with yet.

  • Cleaning up kitchen scraps to avoid counter surfing and scavenging.

  • Using a long line while practicing recall in a new environment.

Management should always be a part of your training and living with animals.

“Without management, it’s like trying to pump air into a tire with a huge hole in it,” - Jessica Ring (My Fantastic Friend).
